Starting Position

Simple Apologetics
A basic fact: In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.  Hebrews 11:3
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.  Colossians 1:17

Creation was a succession of monumental, supernatural creative miracles by God; out of nothing other than Himself. Science cannot contribute anything to our understanding of creation since there were no observers, and by definition science can say nothing about the supernatural. Creation cannot be verified by any naturalistic methodologies since creation did not come about by any known naturalistic processes and cannot be reproduced or duplicated in any way. God has given us His record of creation in the Scriptures. Jesus, Himself quoted from the Genesis account of creation. We either believe what the Bible clearly says about creation or we don't. Science can confirm or deny that simple fact.
(John MacArthur paraphrase)

We hold: creatio ex Deo, ex nihilo. Creation was by God—from God's essential being alone. Meaning, from nothing external to God (out of nothing else, other than Himself) in 6 literal days less that 10,000 years ago. Christ now holds all of creation together by His mighty power, not the Higgs boson (God particle).

Evangelism through Apologetics
.....

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. Psm 19:1-4

All mankind knows that God exists

All mankind knows that God exists. There has never been a time when there was so much factual evidence for God's existence, yet so many unbelievers. This is not a matter of insufficient scientific proof, rather rebellious unbelief. They just hate the thought that God exists and spend an inordinate amount of their time trying to suppress it, and justify their foolish unbelief. Nevertheless, as Paul noted in Romans, they are without excuse.

Biblical evangelism is not just discussing the latest scientific discoveries and how they seem to point to the God of the Bible. Rather, being a faithful witness means confirming where God's heart is and how far He has gone to save us, along with the reality of eternity in Hell for those who reject Him.

All mankind knows God exists. It is our privilege to participate in God's plan by not only confirming His existence but revealing who He is, His character and nature. How we go about this matters to unbelievers and believers alike. We are to be witnesses of his loving kindness toward us in sending Christ to die for our sins.

Our Method, Reason, Purpose, Goal

Our method is to use the reasonableness of simple questions that some may believe the sublime answers.

If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?  John 3:12

The reason we defend the Genesis account by Moses is that he was not only writing of Christ our Creator, but Christ our Savior.

For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?  John 5:46-47

The purpose of our lives is to be witnesses to the truth of scripture as it points to Jesus Christ as the Way, the Truth and the Life.

For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth.  John 18:37
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  John 14:6

Our goal is the salvation of others, through the proclamation of the truth of God's natural and special revelation of Jesus Christ.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.  Colossians 1:15-20

The Starting Position Of The Believer
Is Diametrically Opposed To That Of The Unbeliever

If you try to avoid the antithetical position that God sovereignly set in place between believers and unbelievers, your best efforts will only confuse this issue more. The difference between your worldview and the unbeliever's worldview offers you a critical advantage in an information age where one must scream to be heard. Don't hide the difference trying to be neutral, use it to your advantage. They are of their father—you are of yours. That's the difference, not scientific sophistication.

Christianity's Uniqueness, Exclusivity, and Indispensability

This issue is moral not intellectual. Darwin said looking at the eye made him cold, and a peacock feather made him sick. Looking at the truth of God's Word leaves most unbelievers ice cold, and the thought of exchanging their autonomous freewheeling lifestyle for one of righteousness and holiness in Christ makes them sick.

They know that to follow Christ they would have to give up their most cherished right—self-determination..Their right to decide what's best for them, and what lifestyle will bring them the greatest happiness. Whether to be the Captain of their fate, or just a cabin boy. Whether to follow their dream, or follow Christ.

They reject God's love, God's grace, God's mercy, God's forgiveness in ignorance because they're deceived, blinded by the god of this age who is at work in them. They are under God's righteous judgment, headed for eternal destruction but they don't believe it. They can't see it. They won't acknowledge it because they love their lives the way they are. They love this present darkness and the lies of the evil one, rather than the light and the truth of the risen and reigning one.

"According to Dr. Van Til, 'the antithesis' revealed in the Bible must be pressed with unbelievers in order to guard Christianity's uniqueness, exclusivity, and indispensability... Van Til says we are children of the King. To us, not to the world do all things belong. It is only if we demand of men complete submission to the living Christ of the Scriptures in every area of their lives that we have presented to them the claims of the Lord Christ without compromise.  In short, we must not synthesize Christ's words with unbelieving philosophies, but rather present Him antithetically in apologetics. Only then do we do so without compromise."  Dr. Greg Bahnsen  (emphasis added)

"The renewed man acts upon new principles, by new rules, with new ends, and in new company. The believer is created anew; his heart is not merely set right, but a new heart is given him. He is the workmanship of God, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.

Though the same as a man, he is changed in his character and conduct. These words must and do mean more than an outward reformation. The man who formerly saw no beauty in the Saviour that he should desire him, now loves him above all things.

The heart of the unregenerate is filled with enmity against God, and God is justly offended with him. Yet there may be reconciliation. Our offended God has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ. By the inspiration of God, the Scriptures were written, which are the word of reconciliation; showing that peace has been made by the cross, and how we may be interested therein. Though God cannot lose by the quarrel, nor gain by the peace, yet he beseeches sinners to lay aside their enmity, and accept the salvation he offers.

Christ knew no sin. He was made Sin; not a sinner, but Sin, a Sin-offering, a Sacrifice for sin.

The end and design of all this was, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him, might be justified freely by the grace of God through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus. Can any lose, labour, or suffer too much for Him, who gave his beloved Son to be the Sacrifice for their sins, that they might be made the righteousness of God in him?"
  Matthew Henry   II Corinthians 5:16-21

Spiritual Deception

Those poor people without Christ have no hope, but Christ. And we can relate, because we were just like them. The only difference is that Christ has not done for them what He has done for us. Through God's grace and God's grace alone we were saved. Through his merciful intervention on our behalf we were saved!

Therefore, as ambassadors of Christ we must pray for them, and contend for them, not with them, interceding on their behalf before God that they may also be saved!  2 Cor 5:17-21

A very simple format for doing that is:  Pray, Train, Connect, Expect.

Pray that the Lord will open doors for you to share your faith with others. Train yourself to think more like Christ than the world, using more scripture than science. Connect with others by using simple questions that will draw them out and help you understand where they're coming from, what they really believe. Then you'll be in a position to help them take one small step toward Christ by asking followup questions that will reveal the inconsistencies and contradictions in their thinking. Expect the Holy Spirit not only to superintend your time together but to take the things you've said, and all of the scripture you've shared, to their heart; and then to open the door wider to sharing with them again. It all begins with prayer. Prayer is the single most important factor in sharing your faith by defending Christ.

Remember, your goal is to help them take One Small Step Toward Christ. Don't worry about saving multitudes by the end of the week, just ask Jesus to please help you by His Holy Spirit bring others to His cross that they may also believe and be saved!

If you think you can share enough compelling scientific evidence and information that some will believe, you're deceived. Only God can save them and He does it by His Holy Spirit and His Word. So, don't waste time and a precious opportunity discussing the latest scientific discovery. Use scripture liberally, often, always!

Let them see that their irrational response to God's obvious revealed truth is an evidence of their captivity to a rebellious sinful nature.

Let them hear you use scripture more than your own thoughts and opinions. Without scripture, you're another voice in an information age.  Romans 10:17

Show them this was the very reason Christ came and died in their place. To set the captives free from their deadly rebellious sinful nature that was deceiving them, damning them, and dragging them down into the blackness and darkness of hell for all eternity.  Isaiah 61:1

However, unless you employ your most powerful weapon, Fervent Intercessory Prayer, even in the light of your best efforts to present God's revealed truth and the amazing grace of Christ on the cross, those poor people may remain eternally deceived. Only God can save them! Only God alone can save them by the Holy Spirit opening their eyes, breaking their hard rebellious heart and recreating a new heart within them for Christ, and righteousness, and the truth of God's Word.

Fervent intercessory prayer is the most powerful weapon in apologetics.

Unfortunately, all too often it's the least used. To ask God for the eternal welfare of someone, is to ask for something dear and precious to His heart. We will never be more like his Son than when we intercede for others in prayer. So pray more than you witness. Because that's where the real power is located, prayer!!!

Simple Apologetics
 A basic fact:
Evil exists and is evil, God exists and is good, God is sovereign.

  • God has a good and moral reason for everything He does or permits, including the yet undisclosed reason for the temporary existence of evil.
  • God did not create evil. He permits it to exist for His glory. All that He creates or ordains to occur is for the ultimate good of those who love him.
  • A sinful finite creature in rebellion against the infinite Holy God is not qualified to judge whether God has a morally acceptable reason for evil.
  • Evil is not something. It has no essence or being. It is the inverse position of God's nature and attributes. Evil is the absence of all that God is.
  • Evil is a proof of the existence of the Biblical God. Without the Biblical God in the paradigm, evil would not exist anymore than a one ended stick.
  • Evil is not sovereign. It operates solely on the basis of God's good pleasure, within the limits of his sovereignty, to accomplish his divine purpose.
  • Evil is not eternal, but timebound. It is a temporary straw-man that God will destroy forever in His good time when it has served His divine purpose.
  • Without the presence of evil, God's glory best seen in His grace, mercy and unconditional love would have been locked away in His person forever.
  • The paradoxical coexistence of good and evil does not constitute a valid argument against the existence of God. They are antithetical, yet, compatible.
  • At the cross good and evil are seen for what they are. We are seen for who we are. And God in Christ is seen reconciling the world back to Himself.
  • Evil began somehow with Lucifer, God's highest creation choosing to exalt himself above his Creator. Choosing to honor and serve himself above God.
  • The chief end of man is to love God and enjoy Him forever. The chief end of life is holiness (loving and obeying God) which overcomes evil with good.
  • Evil is evil. It is a sin to call evil good. But, when God ordains evil to occur, it is good that it occurs for the fulfillment of His divine purpose.
  • One day very soon, as the sun will be no more, evil will be no more. God will destroy evil forever in His good time when it has served His purpose.

AN EFFECTIVE AMBASSADOR HAS THREE ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

Knowledge, Wisdom, Character

"I am an Ambassador for Jesus Christ.
I can explain precisely what that means,
and I can clearly defend my conviction in the truth of Christianity
in an attractive manner that commends the message."

Greg Koukl

Shutting The Mouth Of The Obstreperous
Not all of us are called to "shut the mouths of the obstreperous" as John Calvin once put it and Greg Bahnsen often did it, or more mouths would be shut. Case in point, the closing 10 minute statements of ACLU attorney Edward Tabash and Dr. Greg Bahnsen debating at the UC (Davis).
