About Us: ICE

Although we realize from experience how difficult it can be to say anything these days without being misunderstood; nevertheless, this is our position.

Our websites are simple by design, humble by budget. Our goal is Impact through Concentration and Elimination using the best apologetic materials available.

The Master's Seminary Statement of Faith

What I believe about God is the most important thing about me. The Master's Seminary Statement of Faith that I have studied at length, subscribe to without reservation and do fully support, is our doctrinal position of faith and practice. Although I often reference the Master's Seminary Statement of Faith and the Master's Seminary Journal, I did not attend the Master's Seminary. I wish I had.

John MacArthur has had an exceptional impact on my life, and has been an encouragement in my walk with Christ for four decades. His relentless exegesis of the New Testament is what God used to instill a deep love and sincere appreciation for Scripture, along with his fierce devotion to the defense of the inerrancy, sufficiency and authority of Scripture.

Although, there's a long list of men that God has used in my life, Dr. R.C. Sproul is the one I consider my father in Christ. His series Defending Your Faith was instrumental in beginning Defending Your Faith Network many years ago. His books, teaching along with TableTalk are a constant encouragement to me.

Yes, We Are Presuppositional (God exists and the Bible is true)

As you may have already observed, we are presuppositional, evangelistic, and have nothing to hide or apologize for theologically.

Presuppositional means what?

"The unbeliever opposes the Christian faith with a whole, antithetical system of thought-not simply with piecemeal criticisms. His attack is aimed not merely at certain random points of Christian teaching, but at its foundation. The particular criticisms utilized by the unbeliever rest upon basic key assumptions which unify and inform his thinking. It is this presuppositional root which the apologist must aim to eradicate if his defense of the faith is to be effective."

"Because the unbeliever has such an implicit system of thought directing his attack on the faith, the Christian can never be satisfied to defend the hope that is in him by merely stringing together isolated evidences which offer a slight probability of the Bible’s veracity. Each particular item of evidence will be evaluated by the unbeliever’s tacit assumptions; his general worldview will provide the context in which the evidential claim is understood and weighed. What one presupposes as to possibility will even determine how he rates "probability."

"An unbeliever is not simply an unbeliever at separate points; his antagonism is rooted in an overall philosophy which is according to the world’s tradition; thus is an enemy of God in his mind  and uses his mind to nullify or obviate God’s word."

"The Christian can then teach the unbeliever that all wisdom and knowledge must take Jesus Christ as its reference point . The believer’s thinking, just as the unbeliever’s is grounded in a self-validating starting-point. This ultimate truth must be an expression of God’s mind; He alone speaks with unquestionable authority and self-attesting veracity. Thus Jesus categorically claimed to be the truth."   Dr. Greg Bahnsen, Always Ready, pp. 67-69

The Procedure for Defending the Faith:

1. Realizing that the unbeliever is holding back the truth in unrighteousness, the apologist should reject the foolish presuppositions implicit in critical questions and attempt to educate his opponent.

2. This involves presenting the facts within the context of the Biblical
philosophy of fact:
a. God is the sovereign determiner of possibility and impossibility.
b. A proper reception and understanding of the facts requires submission to the Lordship of Christ.
c. Thus the facts will be significant to the unbeliever only if he has a presuppositional change of mind from darkness to light.
d. Scripture has authority to declare what has happened in history and to interpret it correctly.

3. The unbeliever's espoused presuppositions should be forcefully attacked, asking whether knowledge is possible, given them:
a. In order to show that God has made foolish the wisdom of the world the believer can place himself on the unbeliever's position and answer him according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceits; that is, demonstrate the outcome of unbelieving thought with its assumptions.
b. The unbeliever's claims should be reduced to impotence and impossibility by an internal critique of his system; that is, demonstrate the ignorance of unbelief by arguing from the impossibility of anything contrary to Christianity.

4.
The apologist should appeal to the unbeliever as the image of God who has God's clear and inescapable revelation, thus giving him an ineradicable knowledge of God; this knowledge can be exposed by indicating unwitting expressions or by pointing to the "borrowed capital" (un-admitted presuppositions) which can be found in the unbeliever's position.

5. The apologist should declare the self-evidencing and authoritative truth of God as the precondition of intelligibility and man's only way of salvation (from all the effects of sin, including ignorance and intellectual vanity):
a. Lest the apologist become like the unbeliever, he should not answer him according to his folly but according to God's word,
b. The unbeliever can be invited to put himself on the Christian position in order to see that it provides the necessary grounds for intelligible experience and factual knowledge—thereby concluding that it alone is reasonable to hold and the very foundation for proving anything whatsoever.

c. The apologist can also explain that Scripture accounts for the unbeliever's state of mind (hostility) and the failure of men to acknowledge the necessary truth of God's revelation; moreover, Scripture provides the only escape from the effects of this hostility and failure (futility and damnation).

The Grammatical-Historical Hermeneutic Rules Here

Needless to say, the Grammatical-Historical hermeneutic rules here!

We believe in the verbal/plenary inspiration of scripture, that every word of scripture (original autographs) to be God breathed, the actual words of the Living God. We believe scripture is: inerrant, infallible, authoritative, sufficient, complete, and determinative. We believe in the perspicuity (clarity) of all scripture in all of its genres OT-NT.  We believe the Bible constitutes the only infallible rule of faith and practice on this planet until Christ Jesus returns in glory.

Key Resources

  • The Bible is the final authority on this planet until Christ Jesus returns, and until that great and glorious day, sola Scriptura!

  • Robert Coleman's, The Master Plan of Evangelism clarified my responsibility in evangelism and disciple making as none other.

  • Greg Bahnsen's, Always Ready is always on my desk next to my MacArthur Study Bible and The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.

  • Greg Koukl's, Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions is the best game plan I know of for the 21st century.

  • Del Tackett's, The Truth Project is the finest introduction to worldviews available, it shortens the learning curve dramatically.

  • Our primary theological resources are: Grace To You and Ligonier Ministries.

  • Our primary worldview resources are: Summit Ministries and The Truth Project.

  • Our primary evidential resources are: ICR, CMI and AIG.

Greg Bahnsen's voluminous body of work on presuppositional apologetics and epistemology has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. He defended the faith at a level and in a manner that was truly Christlike. Greg Koukl's Tactics gave me a structure to use Dr. Bahnsen's presuppositional arguments effectively.

Background

Born in Phoenix, Arizona to great parents. Attended a small Methodist church. Worked as a men's clothing buyer for two large department store chains. Built and operated my own better men's clothing store until I met a beautiful young woman on her way home from a CCC staff meeting. My life was radically changed.

A year later we were married and headed off to seminary in Portland, Oregon. Although
I did not graduate, we served as missionaries with World Gospel Crusades, I have served as a Jr. High pastor, a College/Career pastor, and Associate pastor. I have been working in apologetics for over 25 years. Judi is a retired school teacher. I work part-time for the United States Postal Service. We get out traveling Oregon as much as we can. The picture was taken by my fishing partner, Judi.

What's one of my greatest fears besides pride, error, or moral failure? A reoccurring one, that I have not been able to dismiss all throughout my Christian life.

I recently found it penned this way by someone I respect and was encouraged to find that I wasn't alone:

.

"I am getting desperately afraid of going to heaven for I have had the vision of the shame I shall suffer as I get my first glimpse of the Lord Jesus; His majesty, power and marvelous love for me, who treated Him so meanly and shabbily on earth, and acted as though I did Him a favor in serving Him.

.
No wonder God shall have to wipe away the tears off all our faces, for we shall be broken hearted when we see the depth of His love and the shallowness of ours."

Made A Decision To Follow Christ?

If you have recently given your life to Jesus and have chosen to follow Him, Congratulations! It's the best decision you will ever make in your life, and over time, you'll begin to see how true that statement is as you realize it really wasn't just your decision. But, you need to be ready, there's a price to pay for following Jesus.

If indeed, God has performed a miracle in your life the proof will be an ongoing transformation of your whole life. You will begin to love things that you once ignored or even hated, and you'll find yourself beginning to hate some of the things you once loved. As a child of God, the Holy Spirit will begin to change and mature every aspect of your life until you conform more and more to the likeness of His Son.
Made A Decision To Be Christlike?

If indeed, the Holy Spirit has begun a work in you, the proof will be His ongoing presence in your life creating a love for His Word and a desire to be more like Christ. You will know and be sure that He loves you beyond all measure and that you are now His child, His personal work of love and kindness. By God's grace, over time, there will be some progress toward Christlikeness. If not, if there is no noticeable change in your lifestyle, then there is good reason for concern regarding the reality of your regeneration. You should then go before the Lord in fervent prayer and pour out your heart and plead with Him to please save you, and confirm it.

Two of the most obvious confirmations of genuine regeneration will be that you have a new relationship with God's Word, and you will have a new relationship with sin. These are just a part of what is called the sanctification process, where the Holy Spirit of God literally comes to live within your heart to sanctify you.

The best evidence of genuine salvation is the sanctification process, that continues to conform you more and more into the image of Christ in every area of life. Christ becomes precious to you above all else in this world. Heaven, your real home. The Word of God, your highest delight. Fellowship, your joy and rejoicing.
